A coworker of mine had his mother pass away this morning, the day before thanksgiving. it all just brings to light how very real of a thing a family members death can be. i will never take my family for granted, and am a lucky man to have them.
out at sea again, about 2 1/2 years ago, our ship was receiving fuel from a replenishment ship at 2130. i was one of the guys helping to heave the fueling probe to our fueling station. when we disconnected after fueling, the man operating the winch on the rep. ship did not brake. he pulled in the entire line back on the spool as fast as it would go. the guy right behind me had gotten slightly wrapped up in the rope, but was able to free himself before it left deck. after it came off of him, the end snapped around my pinky finger with enough force to rip it off, but i was lucky it did not wrap around, thus avoiding losing a finger.
back a while ago, there was a time in my life where i never had a permanent home. my mother, sister and i were always having to move because of financial issues, or problems with landlords. it was getting to the point where we were going to be evicted out of our final home, and i would possibly have to live with my grandmother. my mothers boyfriend at the time helped us more than i could ever have imagined. we were able to get a permanent house that we could call our own, and shortly after, they were married, and have been happily now for almost 6 years. i will always find a way to help them with anything they need.
even though i am in the military, i have good job security, decent pay, my own apartment and car, and i get to work with guns all the time. the guys in my division also make it all the more worthwhile, and have become my family away from home, and we will always be there, and fight for each other.
my point is to never forget the things you have to be thankful for, whether it is big or small. we all need something to hold onto in our hearts, and mind to keep us standing, and to remember all that we have. I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving
